Some news about Xeon and Itanium processors

Intel announced the release of Itanium 9500series processors replacing 9300 series but not only that...! Intel announced that Xeon and Itanium processors will be merged, sharing the same Motherboard, chipset, and CPU socket aswell. That means
building an itanium computer can be little bit cheaper than before, or the future migration from Itanium to Xeon processors will be easier and cheap.

here's a comparison between  9500 and 9300 series

9500series:
  • Itanium 9560 (2.53GHz) : cores: 8 - threads: 16 - L3: 32MB - TDP: 170W
  • Itanium 9550 (2.4GHz) : cores: 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 32MB - TDP: 170W
  • Itanium 9540 (2.13GHz) : cores: 8 - threads: 16 - L3: 24MB - TDP: 170W
  • Itanium 9520 (1.73GHz) : cores 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 20MB - TDP: 130W
9300 series:
  • Itanium 9350 (1.73Ghz): cores: 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 24MB - TDP: 185W
  • Itanium 9340 (1.6Ghz): cores: 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 20MB - TDP: 185W
  • Itanium 9330 (1.46Ghz): cores: 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 20MB - TDP: 155W
  • Itanium 9320 (1.33Ghz): cores: 4 - threads: 8 - L3: 16MB - TDP: 155W
  • Itanium 9310 (1.6Ghz): cores: 2 - threads: 4 - L3: 10MB - TDP: 130W
As we can see there are plenty improvements to the new 9500 series making that 3 years old 9300 series look obsolete.
And now the bad news... RedHat company and Microsoft aswell announced their intention to discontinue the IA64 architecture in their future operating systems, however many linux distributions and BSD operating systems support IA64 so... there's always a replacement for RHEl/Windows.
